I haven't been to the US since 2008 (aka year of the GFC). So apparently now for countries under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), you cannot just rock up with your PP, but you also have to register your PP here at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/. Have your CC ready too because they charge USD $14 ($10 for approved application, $4 administrative fee) to register that you are not mentally ill or currently suffering from any venereal diseases. Let's all thank President Obama for signing the Travel Promotion Act (TPA) of 2009.

Co-incidentally, President Obama was born in Hawaii...
